Here is a fabulous 1973 Manuel Contreras Classical Guitar in Excellent + Condition.
It is set up with low action like a flamenco guitar with light tension strings. If you like higher action a set of normal or hard tension strings should do the trick
This Guitar has no cracks or any other repairs done over the 52 years of its life.
It has a Varnish Finish which has caused the guitar to turn this very, very darkened color over the years a you can see in the pictures.
It does have replacement Gotoh Tuners as shown, but the original tuners are in the hard case.
This was in all probability an experimental style guitar which was common with new builders of this time period for Manual Contreras.
It has a laminate Cedar Top, a laminate Brazilian Rosewod back, and highly figured laminate Mahogany Sides. While the guitar has laminate wood , the Cedar Top is supported with only 3 light fan braces !!!! This allows the top to vibrate freely.
This gives the Guitar is nice warm tone. (Note: Many high end classical guitars have been made with laminate wood, with very light top bracing)
It does have quite a bit of checking in the varnish on the top as you would expect on a guitar of this age, which does not photograph well. It also has a little chipping area of the varnish in the binding on the back bottom rim.
The pictures shows this, but it is not that noticeable when you look at the back in person.
It also has a few very, very tiny dings that cannot be photographed well. None of these condition issues can be seen from three feet away.
This Guitar was made at the very height of Manuel Contreras’s Guitar design and building period
